About

7647.jpgPenelope did her foundation work at St. Martin’s School of Art and received her BA with 1st honors in Graphic Design and Illustration from Camberwell in London. She completed her post-graduate course in printmaking at the Central School of Art, where she was the winner of the prestigious Royal Academy Printmaking scholarship.

Penelope worked as an illustrator for advertising and publishing and as a storyboard artist in the film industry. She also wrote and illustrated three of her own books for children, and began developing designs on glass to sell to retail outlets. Eventually, Penelope developed a unique and completely original process for the decoration of glass. Consequently, Penelope was awarded English and American Patents on the exclusive process she invented and now utilizes in her glasswork.

Penelope’s retail outlets now number over 300 and include many famous stores, museum shops and design centers. She is also planning to expand back into the European market. Penelope's work is featured in many design and fashion magazines including: Gourmet, Elle Decor, Better Homes and Gardens, The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, Boston Globe Magazine, Taste, etc. Please see "Press". Her work has also been used by prominent set designers in such films as "Batman" and by well-known architects and interior designers, internationally.

Penelope Wurr designs are produced in small, limited editions and one of a kind. Using a combination of sandblasting and translucent enamel overlay, Penelope creates a graphic finish more reminiscent of textiles than of glass. Her work includes tableware, bowls and vases. By commission her studio will make screens, window-glass, and tabletops. She continues to develop new techniques to meet the requirements of her far-reaching design concepts. At the risk of being categorized, she would say that her work is, “designer glass with an original quality all its own”.

Penelope's studio is located in “Woodhouse”, a 200-year-old barn she renovated in Putney, Vermont, where she also makes her home. Penelope and her husband, Michael, have two sons. Penelope and her family spend part of every year in their house in the quaint village of Frigilana, Andalucia, Spain, where Penelope also has a small studio.
